THE FORMATION OF THE ROYAL EDWARD LODGE
It is recorded in the minutes the circumstances that gave rise to the desire to form a
new lodge. Several masons living in Onslow Village, decided they would like to
form a new Lodge from members living in that area to forward the Principals of the
Craft. With the most helpful assistance of the R W The Earl of Onslow P J G W
( Eng ) a petition was forwarded to the M W Grand Master to afford them such
facilities, which were readily granted. The Petition was recommended for
favourable consideration of the M W Grand Master by the Royal Alfred Lodge
No 777 .
It is also recorded with great satisfaction that the R W Bro HRH The Wince of
Wales KG etc., etc., PGW. Provincial Grand Master has been pleased to allow the
Lodge to be denominated " The Royal Edward Lodge ", also to use as a Lodge
Badge His Royal Highness's Crest of Feathers bearing the motto " I Serve"
The Warrant of Constitution of The Royal Edward Lodge No 4787 was given by
Command of The MW Grand Master HRH The Duke of Connaught and Strathcarn
KG etc., under the hands of the RW Deputy Grand Master The Rt Hon Sir
Frederick Halsey Bart PC and the VW Grand Secretary E P Colville Smith under
the seal of Grand Lodge London on the 4th November 1925. The Lodge was to
meet at Bretts' Restaurant on the first Monday in January, February, November and
December.
Earnest John Lake to be the first Master,
Harold King the first Senior Warden and
George Campion Bateman the first Junior Warden.
The Lodge was consecrated at Bretts' Restaurant, Guildford on
Thursday 25th March 1926:-

After the Consecration ceremony W.Bro. Schofield duly
installed W.Bro. E.J. Lake as Worshipful Master. The address
to the Wardens was delivered by W.Bro. Nalder and the
address to the Lodge by W.Bro. Holland. The Designate
Treasurer, W.Bro. J.H.W. Cleave, P.P.G.S.D. was duly
elected and invested as Treasurer. Bro. T. Woolgar was
elected and invested as Tyler and took over from W.Bro. J.
Foxley Norris L.G.R. who had acted as Tyler during the
Consecration.
